White Disease by ajinak White Disease by ajinak
A few years ago I toyed with an idea of portraying strong female heroines from literature - today I see that the strongest stories writes life itself. This painting is not inspired by any particular story - it consists of fragments of memories, feelings and silent admiration to those who - under any circumstances - do not surrender in advance.

(It started as a remake of one of my older paintings and ended up as entirely new painting. And also a paraphrase of an old, well known piece of art.)

Digital painting (Photoshop CS3 + Wacom Intuos4 M)

And i can say that you succeed at least for me.
What strikes me the more is the contrast between what's the women look alike and what she makes the viewer feels.
She's skinny, her arms are thin, her skin is pale, her lips too. Her neck is too long and her head is big compared to her frail body, these are the marks of illness.
In reality this makes her strange and maybe scary, but here the strange color of her eyes suggest an other reality: a reality where you can see her true identity and her valor, and you discover an other kind of beauty.
Or maybe what struck me in the beginning (and i just realized it), is that this submission is maybe a modern version of "la jeune fille la perle" from Vermeer :

That's really interesting. Most of the time I'm trying to express my ideas in a visual way and it's not very often when I talk about real thoughts and stories behind my paintings - so in this case it's like you did it instead of me and I can agree with almost everything you've written. And yes, she is a modern version of Vermeer's painting - that's my little twist to it and idea, that's still in my mind for future work. Thanks a lot for your comment, again!

second time that i came to this picture. It is very special, i mean if "white disease" refer to ill like cancer you have succeeded to give a kind of beauty or nobility to these people.

I'm so glad for your comment. That's exactly what this picture is all about - and I feel like not much viewers have actually realized it. I've known some of these people and in their particular cases I was always striked by that inner strenght and courage - even though sometimes it's just the scarf telling there's something wrong.

I'd definitely be pleased if at least something from this whole feeling could be find in this painting.
